What is Peripheral Neuropathy?
Peripheral Neuropathy is simply nerve damage. Typically it affects the feet & hands first. Pain is usually described as tingling, numbness, burning, shooting, stabbing, aching, or a tight band around the area. Unfortunately this disease is commonly misdiagnosed.
What causes Peripheral Neuropathy?
The most common causes are diabetes, chemotherapy patients, and many medications that patients currently take everyday. Other reasons include: hereditary disorders, infections, inflammation, auto-immune disorders, malnutrition, toxic chemicals, and alcoholism. Many times it's impossible to determine exactly what caused the Peripheral Neuropathy. This is called Idiopathic ( unknown reason ) Peripheral Neuropathy.
Previous treatment for Peripheral Neuropathy:
Anodyne, oral medication, or surgical nerve decompression. Anodyne has been proven ineffective, Diabetes Care, Feb 2008 issue. Oral medication does nothing to repair any nerve damage. While the oral medication does provide some symptom relief, many patients don't like the medication because of side effects-drowsy, dizziness, confusion, blurred vision, and other drug interactions. Surgical nerve decompression has shown successful but many patients either don't want to go through surgery or aren't healthy enough for surgery.
